People with diabetes can eat plantains, but they should be mindful of their carbohydrate intake. Carbohydrates for people with diabetes will help improve blood sugar control, reduce the risk of hypoglycemia, and better overall nutrition. Diabetes patients can eat all kinds of food apart from refined sugar or carbohydrates like soft drinks, and cake, among others. Diabetes patients can eat unripe plantains, but it is not recommended as a treatment or one of the food choices for diabetes. What we recommend is not unripe plantain but any source of food that gives complex sugar, and complex carbohydrates. Most of our food items in Nigeria, in Africa, are complex carbohydrates and they are good if taken in the right amount. People who are diabetic still have to take carbohydrates up to about 55 per cent to 60 per cent. So it’s the complex sugar and complex carbohydrates that are recommended.

Plantains, also known as cooking bananas, can be eaten or used when ripe or unripe. Most plantain varieties and meals have a low to moderate glycemic index. Ripe and fried plantains have a higher glycemic index than unripe and roasted or boiled ones. Despite the high glycemic load, moderate consumption of plantains can be recommended for people with diabetic conditions. Plantain-based dough meals have been proven to have favorable nutritional qualities and the potential to control blood glucose levels. Unripe plantains have also demonstrated the potential to be used in managing diabetes.
