Adama Traoré returned to Barça on January 29 of this year from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and was presented on February 2. Having grown up at La Masia, spending eight years in the youth system, this was a homecoming for the lightning-quick winger, who played 826 minutes across 21 games in 2021/22, ten of those as a starter. Neither Adama Traoré nor Luuk de Jong will be continuing at FC Barcelona. The two members of the senior football squad have both been at the club on loan deals until June 30 and will now be returning to their respective teams.

Adama Traore was proud of his Spain debut against Portugal this week. So impressive was his performance that some have wondered whether he would be open to returning to Barcelona, the club he left for England in 2015. Adama also admitted that he has spoken a lot with Ansu Fati, Barcelona's exciting prodigy who is also in the Spain squad. We met in the academy, we spoke about things to do with the team, the things that we have happened together at Barcelona and we know each other well. Wolves attacker Adama Traore was proud of his Spain debut against Portugal this week. It's not my decision whether I would suit Barcelona, my mentality is to work every day to be better.

Traoré joined the Barcelona youth setup and made his way via the B team to a first-team debut in 2013 but he left for Aston Villa in 2015 after only four appearances. Barcelona have instead agreed a deal to take the winger on loan from Wolves for the rest of the season. There is an option for Barcelona to buy Traoré in the summer for €30m (£25m) plus add-ons and they will cover his full salary until June. The deal for the 26-year-old to return to the club where he started his career is expected to be completed on Friday. Wolves would have preferred an obligation for Barcelona to buy but they dropped that to get the transfer done, with Traoré holding out for a move to the Camp Nou. The player had been keen on joining Spurs but the club’s failure to close a deal and the emergence of interest from Barcelona changed the picture. Wolves have accepted that Traoré will not extend his contract beyond the end of next season and rejected a £15m offer from Tottenham. He can play as a winger or wing-back.

Adama Traore's debut for Spain on Wednesday night couldn't have gone much better - and it's a performance that Barcelona will likely rue having let the winger go in 2015. But as time went on - and with Barcelona at that time possessing the fabled MSN front three of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, as well as Pedro Rodriguez - the opportunities for Adama dried up. "I didn't leave Barcelona on good terms", he said. "I left because they stopped giving me opportunities. I didn't know what I had to do better, because they didn't tell me why it was happening". "In my last season - when I played - I believed I had done enough to deserve more playing time," he said. "But they made me go back to Barcelona B, where I had spent two years already." "I wanted to grow as a player, and I felt that leaving was my opportunity to see if I could reach the top level. I would've liked someone at Barcelona to talk to me, at least to tell me the reasons why I wasn't playing I tried to keep training and I didn't demand anything.

Adama Traore explains why his recent Barcelona stint left a ‘bad taste’ in his mouth. In 2022, he got the chance to play for Barcelona, the club where he had developed as a youth-level player. He arrived in the winter window to reinforce Xavi’s attack and had an instant impact on the team’s attack with his arrival. However, his performance declined as weeks went by. Still, he provided four assists in seventeen appearances for the Blaugranes. He directly blamed Xavi for his exit. He was supposed to fill Dembélé’s position, that was the position he was brought in for, and Xavi chose to keep him. These are all stages of learning. As a youth academy player, I’ll always be a Barcelona fan, if I had the option, why not, but it would have to be under different circumstances.
