Boubacar Traoré from Mali is a bluesman. His music is imbued with elements of his Mandingo culture as well the sounds of the kora and the blues of the American deep South. He taught himself to play guitar and went to the capital to pursue a musical career. He played primarily dance music then, and was very popular. The track here is one of my favorites, from his 2015 release M’Balimaou, which Ballaké Sissoko on kora and Vincent Boucher on harmonica.

Boubacar Traoré plays the guitar. His music is characterised by his melancholic voice and bluesy guitar playing, based on circular Khassonke rhythms. In 2005 he records « Kongo Magni » with a variety of guest musicians such as Vincent Bucher (harmonica) and Régis Gizavo (accordion), followed by « Mali Denhou » in 2011, with Vincent Bucher (harmonica) and Madieye Niang (calabash). A CD accompanying the movie revisits the music of Boubacar, with the help of Ali Farka Touré, Rokia Traoré, Sidiki Camara (calabash), Adama Coulibaly (percussion), Mamah Diabaté (ngoni), Andra Kouyaté (ngoni), Adama Diarra (balafon), Kélétigui Diabaté, Ballaké Sissoko (kora) and Madieye Niang (calabash). He could not make a living from his music, and for 15 years he disappeared from the music scene, working as a tradesman and as a tailor.

Boubacar Traoré is coming to the Recital Hall. Founder and ambassador of modern Mandingo music, Traoré uniquely combines characteristic West African playing techniques and musical ideas with the philosophy of the blues from the South of the United States. On May 27 another African music legend performs in The Concertgebouw: Salif Keita.

Boubacar Traoré is one of the great veteran exponents of the African blues, a guitarist, singer and songwriter with a long, and sometimes pained history. He was known as Kar Kar because he was also a footballer. His easy going, gently rhythmic playing is backed by n'goni, calabash and balafon, with outstanding contributions from the French harmonica player Vincent Bucher. His thoughtful, soulful voice against an acoustic guitar style that mixes blues riffs with west African influences. He may be in his late 60s, but he's still one of Mali's finest musicians.
