You should not travel to this country or territory. If you are already in this location, you should consider leaving if it is safe to do so. Our ability to provide consular assistance to Irish citizens in this location is extremely limited. This is our highest level of warning.

FCDO advises against all travel to parts of Mali. FCDO advises against all travel to Mali, except for within 15km of the Tower of Africa located in Bamako. FCDO also advises against all but essential travel to the area within 15km of the Tower of Africa located in Bamako. This is due to the risk of terrorist attacks and kidnaps. There is an increased risk of a terrorist attack near and during public holidays, and periods of national or religious significance in Mali, including Bamako. Support for British nationals is severely limited in Mali, especially outside Bamako. If the security situation deteriorates, the British Embassy may be increasingly limited in the help it can provide. Do not rely on FCDO being able to help you to evacuate in an emergency.

Is it safe to visit Mali? Thanks to its rich history and stunning landscapes, Mali was one of the most popular destinations in West Africa. But that all changed in 2012, when militants took over northern Mali following the collapse of neighbouring Libya. The desert is largely ungoverned and several terrorist groups have continued to carry out attacks. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to 25 km around the capital of Bamako and against all travel to the rest of Mali. Venturing further north than Mopti is considered by many to be too unsafe - which leaves Timbuktu off of itineraries. The desert, too, is considered out of bounds for small group trips. Getting comprehensive travel insurance is crucial when planning a trip abroad. Some companies offer specially tailored policies for people travelling to countries which have FCO travel warnings in place, and often cover our travellers when other insurance companies won't.

Do not travel to Mali due to crime, terrorism, and kidnapping. Violent crime, such as kidnapping and armed robbery, is common in Mali. Terrorist and armed groups continue plotting kidnappings and attacks in Mali. They may attack with little or no warning, targeting night clubs, hotels, restaurants, places of worship, international diplomatic missions, and other locations frequented by foreigners. The U.S. government is unable to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens throughout much of Mali as U.S. government employee travel outside Bamako is restricted due to security concerns. Due to risks to civil aviation operating within or in the vicinity of Mali, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM). Attacks may target Malian government offices and infrastructure, in addition to locations frequented by Westerners.
