The Circum-kidal languages are a language family native to south Vidina and north Tiridinia around the Kidal Sea. The Circum-kidal family is divided into several branches or sub-families, of which there are four groups with languages still alive today: Enqusqan, Insular, and another subdivision that is now extinct. All Circum-kidal languages are descended from a single prehistoric language, linguistically reconstructed as Proto-Kidal, spoken sometime in the late 4th millennium BCE. By the time the first written records appeared, Circum-kidal had already evolved into numerous languages spoken across much of the coastal regions bordering the Kidal Sea. Written evidence of Circum-kidal appeared during the Kidal Bronze Age in the form of the Kidal languages of and . The oldest records are isolated Kidal words and names found in the texts of the Dinuuen colony of in eastern in the 10th century BCE.

Tamashek is spoken mostly in Mali, especially in its central region including Timbuktu, Kidal, and Gao. Tamashek is often understood in Mali as a term that denotes all Tuareg varieties.
