When a man is greeted in Bambara, he responds by saying “N ba” which literally means “my mother.” The way Malians greet each other, whether in quick passing or a long embrace after years of absence, will forever change your perspective on the value and importance of saying “hello.” Malians will meet each other and not long after saying their name, they will launch into a series of friendly insults typically based on their family names or tribal heritage. Women respond by saying “N se” which means “my power.” This greeting is known as sanankuya, or the “joking cousins.” For example, when a Keita meets a Coulibaly they would likely say “You eat beans!” After a brief exchange of joking cousins, both parties will break down in laughter and often embrace or clasp hands.
