Bissap is popular throughout West Africa where it’s called “bissap” and Mexico where it’s know as “Agua de Jamaica.” Hibiscus tea is tart, tasty, and not too sweet. Also known as roselle, hibiscus is native to West Africa, and hibiscus water is one of Senegal’s most popular beverages. Through the slave trade, it arrived in places like Mexico and Jamaica, where it quickly became very popular. Today, Senegal remains among the world’s largest producers of hibiscus. With very high levels of antioxidants, hibiscus is healthy and in this simple recipe, refreshing. The mint infusion makes it the perfect summer drink. I had been meaning to try a recipe for hibiscus water by Pierre Thiam ever since I realized it’s the same thing as hibiscus tea; Bissap is the same thing as hibiscus tea.

Bissap is a drink made from hibiscus flowers. The word “bissap” comes from Wolof and refers to the species Hibiscus Sabdariffa. This plant is also commonly known as Guinea sorrel or roselle. Bissap is also known in Egypt and Sudan, where it is called karkadé. It is also known as roselle in English in some countries. The translation of bissap is therefore: hibiscus drink. In other words, bissap is a hibiscus tea or a hibiscus infusion. However, the term bissap is more commonly used in West Africa and some European countries with strong historical ties to West Africa. Hibiscus Sabdariffa originated in South-East Asia and was imported and popularized in Africa in the 19th century. Bissap is very good for your health and contains many virtues, as well as being high in vitamin C and antioxidants.

In Senegal, the name Bissap is given to the national drink, and similar recipes are found in Gambia (wanjo), Mali (Gambia), (dabileni) or Nigeria (tsobo). This plant (hibiscus sabdariffa) is well known for its ornamental use, and its showy flowers are responsible for the fact that it has been attributed with aphrodisiac properties. The infusion is prepared with the calyxes of the flowers and is consumed both cold and hot. Now all we have to do is prepare a bissap, to see how tasty Africa can be. Bissap is a versatile crop that has many uses. Bissap is hibiscus. Senegalese women add bissap leaves to popular dishes such as ceebu jën and also brew the flowers into a sugary juice or tea. Hibiscus contains antioxidants and has been found to reduce blood pressure. In addition to common vegetables like tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers, cooperative members also grow bissap. You can make bissap tea at home. Once harvested, cooperative members dry bissap flowers to sell throughout the year. Jus de Bissap: Ingredients: Two or three cups of dried hibiscus flowers One or two cups of sugar Optional flavorings: sprig of mint, ½ teaspoon vanilla extract, ½ teaspoon grated fresh ginger root, 1 teaspoon orange-flower water, ½ cup lemon juice, 1 cup pineapple or orange juice The juice can be prepared double strength, by using only half as much water.
